Brain Phenotyping Service

Standard neuroanatomic pathology

Coronal and/or sagittal sections using standard neuroanatomical reference points and a brain matrix to orient wet tissues are used. Protocols to examine any or all tissues along the brain-musculoskeletal axis can be customized for each project.

Multi-brain arrays

Multi-brain arrays can be constructed on oversize glass slides. Perfusion fixation is recommended (see Fixation protocols), followed by immersion fixation. Brains are processed for paraffin embedding before being arranged in their final configuration in a large paraffin block. Arrays are suitable for morphologic studies or immunohistochemistry.

Brain array of developmental stages of C57/BL6 wild-type mouse brains. The array was double-labeled for phospho-CREB and tyrosine hydroxylase.

Three-dimensional reconstruction

We are able to produce high-resolution three-dimensional images of anatomical structures by reconstructing serial sections using Amira 3.1 software. This technique is most applicable to reconstruction of structures with complex three-dimensional topography, such as brain or heart. It is also useful for analysis of embryonic anatomy.
